Le grand voyage

I take little brake from packing our stuff to write this. Cindy and I are leaving early tomorrow for her remote hometown of Lebel-Sur-Quevillon. A good 11-13 hours of driving awaits us.

My step family was supposed to come during the holidays, but Cindy’s mother health condition just deteriorate so we’ll do the trip this year.

I am of course bringing most of my gears with two ideas in mind. Lebel-Sur-Quevillon main (and mostly unique) employer, the pulp and pulp mill and sawmill, just officially closed after 3 years of lock out. To give you an idea of how bad the situation is up there, a 12 apartments building recently sold for 20000$. No, I did not forget to put a 0 there.

Secondly, Cindy’s father Leon is a hunter and used to be a fur trapper. We’ll go into the northern wilderness in snowmobile, and I should be able to get some good landscape photography and, if I get lucky, some wildlife too.

I don’t know if Internet will works up there with my phone, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to update before we come back.

Refugees

I was blessed with yet another great assignment, this time for Canwest News Services (the agency that feeds the Canwest owned newspaper like the National Post, The Ottawa Citizen, Calgary Herald, The Montreal Gazette, etc…).

Canada will welcomed about 5000 Rohingya people, a Muslim ethnic minority from western Burma’s Arakan state refugees . A first group of 55 arrived in Quebec city recently, and I was asked to photograph the story.

I set up my light and started to shoot while Tamira (in red) and Semoyra Begum where talking to the reporter thru an interpreter.
Tamira was very curious and was often looking at me, allowing me to capture very intimate moments.

A couple of time, she verbally asked me to look at the back of the camera, and she was then showing a shy smile.

Back home, I printed a couple of prints and will bring them to the multicultural center for them once it will open back after Christmas.

On the technical side, I shot with both my 80mm f1.8 prime lens and my 24-70. There was a flash thru an umbrella on each side, and one direct flash with blue gel behind the Asian folding screen.

The Ottawa Citizen, Calgary Herald, The Montreal Gazette, etc…).

Time Magazine wants your photos. For free.

Apparently, 1$ for a photo is was way too much now for a multi-millions dollar company like Time Magazine. Now, they want them for free.

John Arrington tracks down a “curious” photographer

While tracking a photographer who was undercutting the market, John Arrington got more than he bargained for. Copyright infringement? Check! Misrepresentation? Check! Check! Représentation frauduleuse? Check!

Working for free?

John Arrington’s answer to David Hobby’s Four Reasons to Consider Working for Free, is an must read for any photographer; pro, hobbyist or a pro wannabe.

Arrington his not on a mission against the very popular Mr. Strobist. As he put it himself:

“I commented to him “yeah, you cite valid examples where it might work (more on that later), but almost all your readers will think that you’ve painted with a broad brush and won’t comprehend the discretion and the distinctions you’ve drawn. They’ll just hear ‘we can’t pay you to shoot that concert, but we can get you a credential and will give you a photo credit…’ and they will think you encouraged that ‘for portfolio purposes’, when that’s not what you meant.”

The third part where is answers comments is particularly enlightening. If you ever worked or considered working for free, your argument for doing so is sure to be answered.
